Paint the Town Red Week
For those of us not lucky enough to spend the spring in sunny Florida, Paint the Town Red Week is the busiest week of the year. It’s our opportunity to build excitement about the upcoming season (which isn’t hard after the exciting finish we had in 2007) and to shed some light on some wonderful community service organizations in the Philadelphia area.
This year, the Phillies and Mayor Michael Nutter asked Phillies fans to “Step Up to the Plate and Volunteer,” and worked with Greater Philadelphia Cares to encourage Philadelphians to support causes including children’s education, computer literacy, the environment, senior citizens, and more.

The Phillies also hosted cleanup events at local baseball fields, a blood drive to support the American Red Cross, and wiffle ball games and school pep rallies to encourage kids to keep learning and growing.
For me, this week meant a pep rally at City Hall with Mayor Nutter and the Mummers, riding around in a vintage fire truck with a less-stinky Red Phanatic, attending an energy-charged pep rally at KIPP Charter School, chatting with the brave Phillies fans and members of the media who donated blood, hanging out at McFadden’s with Mr. Greengenes, Mitch Williams, and Michael Barkann to support the Variety Club and generate excitement for Opening Day, handing out gift bags to members of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, and watching Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino (and at one point, Jimmy Rollins’ bobblehead doll) fight over who would have more steals this season.
Really it’s just exciting to be back at Citizens Bank Park again. Every time I am down at the ballpark there’s a line of people buying tickets. I see Phillies hats everywhere… in the grocery store, on the train, at the mall. It’s amazing that even after a long winter fans are just as pumped up as they were the day we won the National League East Division title. Just imagine how excited everyone will be when we win the 2008 WORLD SERIES!!!!
