Phillies Ballgirls Win the Second-Annual Summer Softball Showdown

The Philles Ballgirls took down their competition to win the second-annual Summer Softball Showdown July 19th at FDR Park.  The ballgirls, who were strengthened by the help of Channel 6′s Jamie Apody, Channel 3′s Don Bell, Associated Press Sports Editor Rob Maadi, Comcast SportsNet’s Marshall Harris, radio personality Tommy Jordan, and Coach Tyler Green, won three straight games in the single-elimination tournament to take home the title.

This was the Ballgirls second year winning the tournament, which included the Sixers’ Dancers, the KiXX Dance Team, the Philadelphia Soul’s Soulmates Dance Team, the Flyers Delta Dental Ice Girls, the Wings’ Angels Dance Team, and various media personalities.  The event raises money for the Comcast-Spectacor Foundation, Phillies Charities, and the Philadelphia Soul Charitable Foundation.

In their first game, the Ballgirls faced the Kixx dance team, who gave the girls a run for their money with strong pitching and a talented shortstop.  The ballgirls battled back with   strong hitting steaks, including two 10-batter innings.  They defeated the Kixx and moved on to game two vs. the Soulmates Dance team.

The Soulmates, who performed an impressive dance routine between the games, gave the ballgirls their toughest competition of the day with impressive offensive skills.  Don Bell provided some impressive pitching to keep the ballgirls in the game, and Lindsay Brown (who hit two inside-the-park homeruns during the tournament), Marshall Harris, and Laura Litzenberger provided key hits to keep the offense on track.

In the championship game, the ballgirls faced the Flyers Delta Dental Ice Girls, who had a bye in the second round of the tournament.  The ballgirls stayed strong, and were supported by Don Bell’s pitching and a fabulous catch from Right Fielder Janita Styles– a softball rookie who played like a pro!

The Ballgirls would like to thank all of the fans who braved the heat and helped raise money for some wonderful charities.  We hope you come out again next year… the rumor is the event will be held at the Jersey Shore!
