“Today a Reader. Tomorrow a Leader”

A handful of Ballgirls were privileged to volunteer their time on Monday night and assist Ryan Howard’s Big Piece Foundation with their second annual “Stand Up For Literacy” event. The event was held at The Franklin Institute where Ryan and Krystle Howard were joined by Phillies teammates, sponsors, and friends and family for a full night of celebration to honor the foundation’s blooming success.

The Big Piece Foundation raises awareness about the overly prevalent issue of illiteracy throughout elementary schools in Philadelphia. Krystle Howard’s background in education and teaching is a huge driving force behind this foundation’s efforts. With the help of her husband Ryan who was brought up in an education-driven family, the couple raises money and awareness to create new learning opportunities for the children of Philadelphia. They are hoping for continued success of the program, so that they can expand beyond the city of Philadelphia.

The event kicked off with a happy hour for all guests and a special red carpet photo opportunity for players and their wives. Guests were able to explore the extravagant silent auction items and place bids before dinner was served. After a few words from Ryan and Krystle Howard, a live auction got the crowd going, and raised many thousands of dollars for The Big Piece Foundation. The event concluded with a comedy set by Tommy Johnagin from Comedy Central.

During our time at the event, the ballgirls greeted and escorted guests to the red carpet for photographs, provided assistance during the live auction, and escorted guests to the comedy show. It was such a great experience to see the Phillies community join together in support of such a great charity foundation. Not to mention seeing the players and their wives outside of the stadium and in a formal setting!

The Ballgirls all wish for continued success for the Big Piece Foundation!
